Dressed in an emerald green floor-length dress while cradling her cute pup ‘Bear,’ model and GuavaPass country manager Sambie Rodriguez-Tung sweetly quips, “Can I use ‘dislike’ instead? Because I don’t like the word ‘hate’.”
At a glance, one can tell she clearly knows what she wants, which could be quite intimidating. And yet, she’s able to catch others off guard with her bubbly and warm demeanor.
As she welcomed us into her home with a genuine willingness to speak of her musings, what was supposed to be a simple closet tour turned into a conversation about the lovely home she shares with her husband Mikko Tung.
Watch as she takes us through the things she can’t live without.
What keeps you busy these days?
Since the wedding is over, I’ve been mostly busy with work and gearing up for the official market launch of ClassPass. The team and I have been fully focused on this, so I’m quite excited to introduce this product to the Manila Market by the end of the month.
What’s your usual day like?
My husband and I are both morning people. We wake up at 5 AM everyday and start our day lighting some incense and working out. Then we both separate for work. My day is usually filled with meetings, answering emails, and conference calls with colleagues from all over the world. The time difference usually gets a little tricky, but I’ve gotten used to it.
We like to end our day winding down over some Netflix and a nice home-cooked meal.
Would you have any rituals or habits that you absolutely need to do to put you in a good mood?
I need to have my morning quiet time. I usually use this time to meditate or reflect. It helps me get into the right headspace for my busy day.
On Style
Describe your personal style and preferences when it comes to decorating your home.
I like being surrounded by things that mean something to me. For example, all my art resonates with me and speaks to me. I love being able to come home to a place that feels like an extension of myself.
Where or from whom do you find inspiration?
Growing up in a family of art collectors, I have always been exposed and taught to appreciate art. This upbringing has definitely played a huge role in how I put together my home and my personal style.
Nothing in this world will ever compare to the high I feel when I am able to hang an artwork I truly love. I could stare at it for hours while eating a bag of chips!
What is the oldest and dearest item you own?
I will most likely not have very old items since I’m not much of a hoarder. I enjoy spring cleaning and detaching from things that don’t ‘spark joy’ as Marie Kondo puts it. But right now the dearest item that I own would have to be my wedding ring. I’m still clearly on my newlywed high and I can’t help but smile and remember that special day every time I look at it.
Since you’ve just recently moved into your new home with your husband, did you experience any challenges?
So far, I consider myself very fortunate because I married such a domesticated man who pulls his own weight around our home. We seem to have a great sense of teamwork and have yet to encounter any huge road bumps when it comes to managing our household. However, in keeping the peace, our rule to follow is always ‘us against the issue.’ We always remind ourselves that we are not each other’s enemy, but rather, we are both on the same team cooperating and conversing to find the best solution to the problem.
Which items do you absolutely need to have at home?
Candles and incense. My home has to always smell amazing!
On Art
Since you have your own collection of artworks, what got you started? What is it about art that you particularly love?
I grew up being surrounded by my titas and titos who collect art. I think at a very young age, I learned to appreciate and yearned to someday have a collection of my own that reflected my own soul and personality. Nothing in this world will ever compare to the high I feel when I am able to hang an artwork I truly love. I could stare at it for hours while eating a bag of chips! I think what I love most about collecting art is that I am able to find out more about myself. It is through this kind of exposure that I am able to identify what resonates with me and ask myself why. It’s truly a deep and emotional experience for me.
What advice would you give to those who want to collect art?
My best advice would be to collect the art you love. I’m a firm believer that one’s collection should be a reflection of one’s personality. After all, you’re hanging the pieces in your home and chances are, you’ll spend years looking at them. So collect and hunt for artists and pieces that call out to you.
